Paperbark Cottage - a love letter to nature

This project holds a special place in our hearts, as it involved a major renovation and extension of our 95-year-old Queenslander, located in the beautiful South Golden Beach on Bundjalung Country. Taking on the roles of Owner Builder, Designer, and Project Manager, Studio Isaza reimagined the existing floor plan to better connect the home with its lush, sub-tropical surroundings while making daily family life that much easier.

Our goal was to create a home that blended modern functionality with a deep respect for the home’s Queenslander heritage. Preserving the character and charm of the original house was at the forefront of our design decisions throughout.

We raised the house to improve ventilation, airflow, and to open up the gorgeous canopy views. We also added thoughtful new spaces—a scullery, powder room, shared office, and an additional bathroom—to enhance the home’s functionality and flexibility. Throughout the design, we focused on maximising natural airflow, light, and outlooks, ensuring the spaces feel as connected to the outdoors as possible.

Stay tuned for photos of the new spaces—coming soon!
